Episode #3: The Death of Underground Hip-Hop w/Blockhead

Open Mike Eagle is an orphan of underground hip-hop.  The just-off-the-radar music that Mike fell in love with from 1991 to 1996 (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Artifacts, Wu-Tang Clan) is dead now, and he helped kill it.  Other Napster users and Gilbert O’Sullivan pitched in, too, as Mike explains.  Later, he checks in with Blockhead, the Manhattan-based producer who has worked with Aesop Rock, Murs, and Mike himself.

I blame this guy, myself.
ALSO MENTIONED:
  • Aceyalone
  • Shitty private schools
  • Terrifying public schools
  • Sculpture
  • Biz Markie
  • Why you can’t make an album like A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Marauders anymore
