SimonAyEm - The Greatest Gift Series

Time to introduce you folks to a highly recommendable producer from my neck of the woods: Basel, Switzerland.

SimonAyEm is part of the five-headed producer crew Prismatic Beats as well as the hip-hop collective TripleNine, a hold-all for producers, DJs, MCs and graff artists. TripleNine have become one of the more notable hip-hop hotbeds in the local and national scenes and have definitely shaped the arts in the last 14-or-so years, giving their output a recognizeable "Basel" branding. If I was to characterize what makes Basel, I'd say a bit rough and occasionally rude around the edges with tongue firmly placed in cheek--and a lot of heart for the art.

This year, SimonAyEm's decided to do a bit of showing off, going through his immense back catalog of beats, to tie us beat heads a neat package of 13 dope beats each. -- And that on a weekly basis! All year round! Oh, for free, too.
He's currently at installment number 21, and there's more than that where it came from.
So I strongly suggest you head on over to his blog to fill your boots and ears, and read up on the dude who should really get a lot more attention beyond our area.

khaderbai - krüml no​.​01 - d'schildchrodd

Long time no post from me. But this time I need to point all of your heads to this guy from my neck of the woods.

Khaderbai is a guy who calls himself "a rather private beatmaker from Zurich" (Switzerland). And perfectly in line with his modesty and self-effacement he named his first release "d'schildchrodd" (the turtle). Some people with 10 times the ego and budget deliver debuts not even half as good. But this first release of his "krüml" (crumbs) series is quite the dopeness. I won't lose a lot of words, cos once you've peeped the video as an appetizer you'll probably agree with my 6-year-old son catching me play it and shout "das isch cooli Musig!" (take a wild guess what that meant.)

And here's the stupid part: you download his full album and pick your own price. Well-made music is supposed to be worth more than a pack of gum. So show some dignity and respect, will you?

Great album by this Vancouver crew and some nice production work by the Dilated/Rocksteady Crew collective (Alchemist, Joey Chavez, Evidence) and others. This brings back fond memories.

El Puto Coke - 100 Beats (2009)

This MC and producer from the city of Vigo, in the far top-left corner of Spain called Galicia, goes by El Puto Coke (which translates roughly as The Fuckin Coke). He's been an active and increasingly central member of the local and regional hip-hop scene since his early teens. Now, at 30, he can look back onto collabs with some of Spain's finest, and he ain't even blown up yet. So there's more and bigger things to look forward to.


This collection of 100 (!) beats (~370 MBs, hence two portions) gives an impressive cross-section of his work. What I was really surprised to find was the great diversity of beats he showcases on this legal beat-"tape". No two beats sound the same, and they make for great listening because Coke likes to keep the beats fresh and flips them around every few moments.

Jon Phonics - Jonathan's Beats and Pieces (2009)

Great instru album by Jon Phonics, a London-based producer and MC. A variety of hard, headnodding and playful beats which he churned out between November and December of last year. (Some producers could hope to make such a lot of dope beats in their lifetime, at best.)

The album is up for free, and it can be got off the man's bandcamp page (where there is more to be had), but if you prefer rapidshare (no e-mail required, nicer tags etc.) here you go.

Da Poet - Instrumentals

Hailing from Istanbul, Turkey, this underground MC and producer goes by the name of Da Poet. Not that I'd understand a single word he says in Turkish on his vocal albums, but his beats speak a wonderful language. Quite good variation across the board, some Turkish music samples here and there give the tracks a fresh touch. These are some instrumentals that he's used on his various releases, solo and collabos. Great listening.

Verbal Kent & Kaz One - Brave New Rap (2009)

Two Chicago cats, Verbal Kent on the mic and Kaz One behind the knobs sat their behinds down in a studio and out came a damn decent album, packed with great guest spots. But this is the intru version, so it's Kaz One production (except for track 14, Fast Forward, which is by Wizard) for all who have so far overlooked this dude. Kaz One and Kent have been friends for years now, and Kaz has produced lots of tracks for Kent's previous albums. Definitely some great variety in this one. Some heavy headnodders, some funky shit for your good foot, and even some tripped out weirdo beats. Nice.

Esoteric - Serve or Suffer (2008)

Esoteric of 7L and Esoteric fame brings an all-instrumental album inspired by the comic superheroes of legendary Jack Kirby and the like. We all knew Esoterrible had a way of ripping the mic to shreds, but on here, he shows a different side of himself. Quite a large variety of beats and atmospheres. Not necessarily beats for battle rhymes but of the more experimental and playful kind with a healthy dose of vocal snippets thrown in. Well-rounded, entertaining and great music to surf the net to. ;)

My favourite is probably "1989" which is packed with samples and soundbites of the time.
