This record has been criminally slept on...it has some filler, but a grip of cuts ("Boatman", "420247", "Every Cloud...", and "Going Home") will stick in your downtempo collection for years. Goodvibe Records put out a few nice records around this time (Mystic's "The Life", Pyro's "Propaganda") and this is one of 'em. This was ripped from the vinyl, so there might be some pops and cracks, but it should be skip-free.

I started to think of this record when I first heard Emancipator's classic. It kind of brought me back to this. This album is probably one of the greatest instrumental albums of all time. This is a staple in the genre, and gets copied CONSTANTLY. If you listen to this record for the first time and feel like it sounds familiar, that's because it probably does. The album's style and sound have been reproduced and bitten by thousands of producers. "Rounds" is probably in my top ten instrumental albums, along with "Petestrumentals" and "Endtroducing..." Even more reaffirming is the fact that this album has been acknowledged by the masters, with remixes from DJ Premier and Jay Dee for As Serious as Your Life. This certainly is an interesting album, and shows the breadth of Four Tet. It's hard enough to abandon the music that you're best at and try something new, but it's even harder to do the latter, AND MAKE A FUCKING CLASSIC. Four Tet was quoted as saying that he wanted to cut away from the folk instrumental genre THAT HE CREATED, and try a more DJ Shadow-influenced release. What you get, is the amazing "Rounds". Check this out, and Emancipator if you haven't. Or just listen to it again.

We should probably avoid a torrent of Ninja Tune posts, but this record is an obvious choice if you dig the dark, chill downtempo. There's an argument about how "innovative" producers that stick to this sound are, but some of us obviously fiend for it, and I'd put Bonobo up as one of the most consistent in the genre (and closer to the hip-hop side than the postrock side of downtempo), but far less experimental than Four Tet (which isn't always bad, IMHO).

This Emancipator album is some of the Hottest Shit I have heard in a while. Seriously. This kid is only 19, and his shit is Nice. Every Track is dope, they all have they're own Individual Feel and Emotion. Super Diverse shit is basically what I'm sayin. I Recommend this HIGHLY, I know that I'm going to have it on Heavy Repeat for awhile... Those of you that may have downloaded that Hydeout Productions Volume 2 Piece might recognize the cut "With Rainy Eyes" from it, It's Real Nice, some Summer Type Shit. Do NOT Sleep On This, Everybody should give it a Listen...

This Disc is dope, alot Dustier & Grimier than Made Into Itself, alot of the Tracks have a completely different Sound, there are some Glitches & Cuts here & there, it's a CD-R and it's how I got it directly from the man Leaf himself (his real name is Steve Wick I believe). He's releasing a new album sometime in Late Winter/Spring called "Rooted From Within" that I'm Super Stoked for... It's going to be Dope. Alright, get down with this Shit, it's Nice.

I picked this up when I was in Hong Kong and I was rather pleased with my purchase. I'd heard of Mix Master Mike from the work he did on Hello Nasty, along with his reputable work with the Invisbl Skratch Piklz, who I mentioned in my last post. So naturally, I wasn't worried when I bought this release, and if I were you, I wouldn't be worried while downloading it. It's a nice concept with some nicely picked samples, add on MMM's scratching and you have a hell of a release.

Sup, fam? What's good? I've been busy with school so I really haven't had time to post, but I thought I'd try and keep this good week of posts going.

I did a search and I'm a little surprised to find that neither of these albums have been posted. Both are solid albums; "The Litmus Test" is a collection of instrumentals that Cut Chemist has done for groups, including Jurassic 5, Ugly Duckling, Blackalicious, and Hiroshi Fujiwara & KUDO. This for me is a big deal because not only are these instrumentals from my favorite groups, but these are also instrumentals from some of my favorite albums. It's a mix and is only like 28 minutes, but it's still worth it. Cut Chemist to me is largely underrated, but we'll discuss that in a minute...

"Live at the Futureprimitive Soundsession" is Cut Chemist and Shortkut improvising on 6 turntables. This shows the range of Cut Chemist's skills. He's like a freestyle turntablist; of course, Shortkut doesn't hurt this mix at all, because he's one of the best scratch DJs in my opinion. In no way does either outshine the other; Cut Chemist and Shortkut share the stage equally. You've probably heard of Shortkut from his work with the Beat Junkies, or less likely, the Invisbl Skratch Piklz, one of the most underrated scratch groups of all time.

"The Audience's Listening" is an amazing album. It's a bit fleeting though because despite it's prowess it really hasn't caught that much fire. The reviews for it were excellent, but I still see 20 requests for "Monkey Barz" for every request I see for "The Audience's Listening". But still, this was probably the best album of 2006 for me. Cut Chemist does his best work on here, cutting each record to pieces. It was this very record that got me into scratching, and honestly, I have yet to hear a better scratch record than this one. Cut Chemist was always considered a superproducer, but I think that it was this record that really showed everyone how shaped he is. This record shows him as multi-faceted; not only can he produce, but holy fuck, he can scratch too! Download this album if you haven't heard it; if you already have this album, give it another listen for me. One.

Lord Finesse!

So in honor of Strictly Beats' one year anniversary, I've decided to do a post about one of my favorite producers, Lord Finesse. This guy is well known as being one of the golden age producers, along with Buckwild, Diamond D, DJ Premier, Showbiz, Pete Rock, K-Def, Large Professor, Marley Marl, Da Beatminerz, Easy Mo Bee, and so forth. If you haven't heard this guy, don't sleep on this. I would say this guy is as good, if not better than Buckwild or Easy Mo Bee. Anyways, there are 39 instrumentals for you to kick back and blaze to. I thought it was appropriate to add this on since Nawl did one of these. First off, I'd like to thank all of the bloggers because we've built a blog with a completely unorganized fashion. I think one of the tools I use most often is the search box, to see whether what I wanna post has been posted yet. But anyways, thanks to Nawl, first off. This dude should really be thanked for opening my musical tastes up, and yours. He's the master of finding the good free instrumental stuff, but he also has a knack for good music in general, such as his memorable Molemen posts, his Hydrabeats and Golden Era posts, and his other random indie instrumentalists. He adds an indie abstract touch to this blog. Andrew opened my eyes up to music that I perceive as flawless. He is constantly making me question the albums that I perceive as classic. He's got me wondering if Lauryn Hill's "classic" is just an average album. His ability to question classics makes me believe that I might have missed something that he saw. Espiv is a friend, and is always reliable when it comes to posting instrumentals that emcees can benefit from (i.e. freestyle to). He adds more to the great chemistry. Rob Steady, 9@Home, Mass Incorporated (where's he been?), Dun, Swann, and Andy don't stop by that much, but when they do it's always cool to chat with 'em. But most importantly, I'd like to thank DJ Espionage for allowing me to contribute to this blog. Honestly, it has been a real pleasure to get to know some of you and expand my music collection. A few that deserve mention are Soul Guru, Repenteths, Albinored, 4Real, Skopos, and many more whom I'm sure I forgot. Pretty much anyone who hits up the CBox just to chat. Word... Well those of you that have been at this Blog since the beginning may remember its Humble Roots which started to grow over at DJ Espionage's Blog 12 Inchers mainly in the C-Box initially. I believe the Concept was first kicked around by Andrew/Espionage/Myself & Swann, if my Memory Serves Me Correctly... Then other people became Interested as the Talks Furthered. I'm really glad that we got together to get this Spot going, also Really Glad that we are still here going strong 1 Year Later. I honestly didn't think we'd have enough stuff to keep it going this long, haha... That obviously isn't the Case. Anyway, I thought I'd Hype this Anniversary with a "Best Of 12 Inchers" Mix I made from some of my Favorite Instrumentals grabbed over at Espionage's Blog, as that is where this Spot began in my opinion...
